Fought as one of the many members of the Nationalist Party of Puerto Rico.
Participated in an attack on the Capitol on March 1, 1954 where she and three other freedom fighters wounded five congress members and violently protested in the Capitol for Puerto Rican independence. Although she was the only one who shot only at the ceiling, she was imprisoned for 25 years until all four activists were released by President Jimmy Carter.
Continued to fight for Puerto Rican independence throughout her last years, where she was once arrested for protesting at a Puerto Rican Military Base at the age of 81.

One of the few female leaders of the Nationalist Party of Puerto Rico; worked to gain Puerto Rican independence from the United States and Spain through political activism and advocacy.
Led the organization and execution of the Jayuya Uprising, which was done in protest of the 1948 Gag Law that prohibited writing and talk of Puerto Rican independence and any and all use or display of the Puerto Rican flag and national anthem/ songs. After the Uprising, she was found guilty and sentenced three times and spent around 17 years in prison before being released in August of 1967.
Known to this day as an educator and political revolutionary for the change and progress she invoked.
